Diving at Titlow, Tacoma

Tom, Dad, and I went diving today at Titlow in Tacoma. We are all still getting a lot of kinks worked out so besides the

  • leg cramps
  • weight
  • poor visibility
  • leaking BCD
  • current
  • effort
  • and

  • duration

We had as good of a time as we could. Dad didn’t actually get to go under because he was improperly weighted AND getting calf cramps. Either problem alone may not be a deal breaker but together? …not pleasant. Tom and I made a 21 minute dive thanks to starting with 2400 PSI in my tank and fighting unexpected current.
DESPITE all that, and to show just how cool diving wildlife can be these are the highlights of what we saw today.

The Octopus was not out like this but rather camped in his rock den. The eel didn’t come out but I had at least this good of a view of his face and some other section of his body. And the Nudibranch looked, well, pretty much just like that.
Pretty cool.

  1. I’ve got some nasty charlie-horses in my legs today, where those cramps were yesterday. I’ve decided to do some serious walking, and when I get into better shape, maybe I’ll walk with my scuba weights on. Then I’m going to go diving again…soon.

That octopus in the link you found is only a half-sized specimen. The ones that Tom and Mark and I saw a couple of years ago were at least twice that size. Look at the size of the largest suction cups (relative to the diver in the photo) and compare that with the ones you saw in the cave. That’s how I’m making my comparison.

  2. I chose that picture (out of three on that site) based on the relative size (by my best guess) of the one we saw in the cave. It wasn’t huge by any standard but was mid-sized I would say, just like you mention here.

I would like to go diving again as well. I am eager to see the Day Island Wall except a wall, by definition, seems a little more difficult.
We really need to get our weight under control, eight pounds on my feet is WAY too much (or was it four?). Either way, it needs to be controlled so that we can establish a good baseline.
Maybe a research dive is in order, to establish best weighting for each of us in our respective suits with and without steel tanks?

  3. We should maybe do a dive somewhere that is really easy so you two can get the weight issue worked out. Mark said that when he gets his extra gear back from being serviced I can borrow it anytime I want so I wont have to shell out $70 each time.

I don’t know if it was from diving or not, but I noticed Sunday night that both of my eyes were really, really red. It appears that I burst some blood vessels or something. I don’t think that we were deep enough for that to happen and I didn’t really have any pain or pressure around the eyes (a little in the forehead though). The condition has not improved as of yet so I may go to a doctor tomorrow if things don’t get better by then. According to a medical website I was on this condition could be caused from over exertion, infection and many other causes including aspirin which I took on Sunday to relieve some calf cramps. Have you guys ever experienced this from diving or otherwise?
