Rain Garden

Okay, so I saw this and I had to show you all. It is called a rain garden and can remove up to 99% of toxins that run off of roofs. Just position near a downspout, dig a hole, plant some plants, and you’re done.

  1. As you know we are contemplating building another house. I want to store all the roof/driveway runoff and then use it to water gardens, lawns, and kids during the summer. The only problem is storage where does one put lots of water until one is ready to use it. A tank, a pond, a pool (Ty “we have a pool and a pond Karl- Pond would be good for you”, Karl “Pond’s r nice”) Of course one can have any of those but cost and regulations drive the choice.

Also one needs to do some filtering of the water as it comes off the roof. What are the toxin considerations? The water storage should be above anything to be watered but below the roof so that no pumps are needed. But should one need a pump what about a water powered pump. ie When it rains I use two gallons to pump one gallon into the tank/pool/pond.

  2. You know, I was reading about rain barrels on

It’s sort of the same idea, but you collect the water in a barrel instead. Then you just have to dip a watering can into it and take the water to wherever you need….

Now that I think of it…you know how you clean out aquariums with those plastic tubes – you immerse the whole tube in the water, cover one end with your finger, put that end into a bucket and let the water pour out. I wonder if you could rig a hose like that to a big barrel and avoid the back and forth trips between the barrel and the rest of the yard?
