Brrrr

We had a long nights sleep last night. The longest I can remember.
This morning at 08:00 I saw the coldest temp: -9.1C
The coldest I can remember.

It has since warmed up a bit with the sunrise.

  1. Wow…warm is definitely a relative term in this case. My outside thermometer seems to be broken, it only wavers between 18F and about 24F…hmmmm…suspicious. Brrr….stay warm.

  2. Hm-m-mmmmmm! I wonder if there is a “thermometer virus” that has infected all of our temperature indicators?! Ours has been stuck between about 13F to 23F.

Note: our thermometer is about six feet away from the side of the house. We have another one against the house — it typically registers 4 degrees warmer (heat escaping from the house).

  3. My “outside” thermometer is inside the garage, so it will show a little extra warmth from the ground, but mostly a delay in readings when the temperature is changing. It has a Min/Max capability, so although I only witnessed a -7.6 C the other day, it shows a Min of -8.1 C. (For you people on the old, non-legal system of measurement, that’s 17.4 F.)

This is not even close to a record cold for this region. I remember one winter in the 60’s when we went ice skating on a pond that had frozen solid. I think the low temperature was -18 C (0.0 F) during that two week period of cold weather.

Wikipedia says the record cold for Seattle is -18 C in 1950 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle#Climate). It appears that the planet is warmer these days.

  4. The lowest I have noticed my thermometer was -12 c. That was at 0900 hrs. so I am sure it was lower at some point during the night. I found that we were gettting some really cold air dropping down from our skylight in the bathroom so a quick trip to the hardware store and $15 later I had a sheet of foam insulation shoved into the hole and man has that made a difference! You can now sit on the toilet (which is directly below the skylight) without worrying about you buns freezing to the seat. Julie is especially happy about that. We too had some strong winds, but never lost power. We did lose our cable internet which is almost as bad – oh the humanity!
