A garden

Yes…a garden.

Slow down just a bit now (Heidicoaster) it isn’t completely done but it is close. The only good place we had to put a garden was very rocky on top with clay beneath so we went ‘elevated’. I looked over the options at the local hardware store and was floored by the cost of 1x12x8foot boards.* So I trekked over to Second Use thinking I may find something there and did I ever. They had tons of solid doors that were A) the right size and B) the right cost…$5 each. Which, by the way, was dang near the cost of one lineal foot of 1x12x8ft hemlock.

So making a long story short, we have two big vegetable garden planters in our side yard with VERY decorative boxes. Now they just need some dirt, seeds, water, and sun.

The latter would be most appreciated by me.

  1. Very good-looking garden boxes! You should be able to raise plenty of delicious, nutritious vegetables therein.

A note of caution: It might be advisable to put a sturdy post on the outside (or inside, with tension ties through the door) of each long side to prevent outward bowing due to the pressure of the moist soil which will be on the inside pushing out. The corners may be already (or certainly can) be tied together to resist this outward pressure.

Your garden is very pretty, and I love your reuse of material. Most excellent.

  3. I would recommend that you also start composting your non-meat food waste and grass clippings. Last year our garden went crazy and I am sure it is because of the composting we did. Between composting and recycling I could go a month before I need to take the trash can out to the curb for pick-up. Just make sure you go and get some red wriggler worms from the nursery to help the composting along. Good luck with garden, fortunately you should not have to worry about deer or livestock getting in the garden like James and Heidi do. The only pests we had were slugs and Julie found a non-toxic, organic slug killer for that.
