Flat tire

If for no other reason than as a tracking mechanism – I am here to report the first flat tire on my Schwalbe Durano tires over nearly the last 5000 miles (two sets of tires).
The interesting thing is I couldn’t locate the cause.

  1. Front or rear? I have noticed that almost always it is the rear tire on an automobile that goes flat (due to a sharp object tipped up by the front tire, I believe has been proven).

An old-fashioned way to find out where the hole is, is to immerse the inner tube in a pan (or tub) of water, one section at a time. The tube needs to be inflated fairly well (enough to cause a “balloon” to start in one or two places).

If you keep track of where the stem was when you removed the tube from the tire, you can then “backtrack” to the section of the tire where the hole in the tube was located and find the minuscule (maybe) object that punctured it in the first place. (Remember to keep track of the “left and right” side of the tube and tire)

  2. Found the cause last night in the warmth of my garage.
It was a longish, jagged, knife shaped piece of glass that punctured from the side, near the turn from the tread to the sidewall.
This location is near the edge of the tire insert and knicked a smallish hole in the side of my tube.

It is extracted now – that and several other pieces of glass embedded in the tread portion which would, theoretically, eventually make their way into the tube.

    Really good tires.

  3. That (glass shards) is why it is not advisable to rub the back of your fingers around the inside of the tire to find what pierced the tube! Glass and the pointy end of a nail!! OUCH!!
